The Science Tokyo Way
Creating a better future for and with society through the power of science
In line with its mission of “advancing science and human wellbeing to create value for and with society,” Science Tokyo is pioneering and developing uncharted initiatives that were previously deemed out of reach. This approach facilitates the pursuit of research-based solutions to societal issues across the entire Institute and amplifies Science Tokyo’s role in creating enhanced societal impact.
Designated National University scheme
Under the Designated National University Corporation (DNU) system, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology designates national university corporations that are expected to develop world-class education and research activities to a considerable degree and, as a result, create innovation and significantly boost the level of education and research at Japanese universities.
Campus Plan
Through the redevelopment of its campuses, Science Tokyo strongly promotes strategies to realize its unique long-term goals.

Top Global University Project
The Top Global University Project, a funding project launched in FY 2014 by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, aimed to enhance the international competitiveness of higher education in Japan by providing focused support to leading universities that conduct world-class education and research, universities that take on pioneering initiatives, and universities that are committed to comprehensive university reform and internationalization.
After being selected as Type A (top type) universities that conduct world-class education and research, and have the potential to be ranked in the top 100 in world university rankings, TMDU and Tokyo Tech — Science Tokyo’s predecessors — implemented a variety of pioneering initiatives.
Although this project concluded in FY 2023 after a 10-year funding period, the newly formed Science Tokyo continues to implement pioneering initiatives and promote internationalization actively.
